This long vintage 1940's coral necklace consists of eight strands of natural, precious red Mediterranean coral sphere beads, graduating in size from  4mm to 10mm. The necklace has a rose shaped clasp in yellow gold and measures 29" in length. These fine quality coral beads are natural and undyed, they total over 9.6 ounces in weight.  Harvested since ancient times, coral was used by many cultures throughout history. It was believed to be a protector against evil and harm, infertility and in some cultures as a signifier of social rank.  Fine natural Italian red coral comes from the waters by the island of Sardinia. which has always been famous for the finest coral in the world. Precious coral from those waters is revered for having evenly matched, deep red color and very few blemishes.  Today Italian coral is protected and only harvested by hand at great depths by scuba divers from May to September......... EXCELLENT QUALITY
